Event
The Jane Addams Hull House Association screened Greensboro: Closer to the Truth at two events on January 27, 2010. The first event was an annual program management retreat and training session that the Center for Civil Society organized this year to consider how arts and media can be used in both programming and advocacy work of Hull House. Adam Zucker attended and shared a ten-minute clip of the film to present his experience as a filmmaker using film to affect social change. Some significant outcomes include the commitment of one youth program working on an anti-violence initiative to use the film to support that effort; a decision to continue using film in these retreats and trainings; and excitement to plan ways to produce video stories to support intergenerational alliance-building for their Grandparents Please program.
The evening event, the Chicago Dinners Dialogue Project, also featured the film as its centerpiece. During the dialogue, participants discussed the links between the themes raised in the film and local concerns, including: murders of young people in the streets of Chicago; need for intergenerational understanding; the relevance and challenges of a Truth and Reconciliation process appropriate to Chicago; and police brutality.
As a result of the events, the Center for Civil Society will: convene planning and education sessions related to use of the Truth and Reconciliation model in Chicago through its Chicago Dinners Dialogue Project; work with other Hull House programs on ways to use Greensboro: Closer to the Truth and other arts and media to enhance its programming; and incorporate the Bridge Transitions Model of facilitation in future projects.
